SLT

Speech and Language Therapy services

Speech and Language therapists (SLTs) are qualified professionals that work with clients, who present with a variety of disorders of communication, language and speech.

For example, an SLT may work with children, who develop speech difficulties as they grow up which can often co-exist with other difficulties such as Autism.

Difficulties with speech and language can also exist independently, such as expressive language delay, speech impairment etc.

Our SLT is trained to identify the different types of difficulties and recommend therapy to help with these issues.

Reasons for Referral:

  • Slow to start talking
  • Not using a lot of words for their age
  • Unclear or hard to understand
  • Getting frustrated and having difficulty understanding or expressing emotions
  • Not following directions and instructions
  • Struggling with reading, spelling or comprehension
  • Finding it hard to engage with others and play with their peers
  • Having difficulty with conversations (e.g. talking about own interests only)

If an of these sound familiar for your child, please contact our clinic on 021 4321 729.

Our SLT Team is headed up by Aileen O’Brien, , BSc. (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy

Aileen is a Senior Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist who has recently joined the Sunflower Clinic team. Since graduating from University College Cork in 2009, she has worked in a variety of paediatric settings including preschools, schools, private practice and disability services in Ireland and Australia.  Aileen has extensive experience helping children develop their language and social interaction skills, and is passionate about doing so using naturalistic, relationship-based approaches such as DIR Floortime therapy in her work.

She has undergone training in the ‘Hanen – More Than Words’ language program, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), and the SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Feeding. Aileen is also trained in ‘1 2 3 Magic and Emotional Coaching’, an approach which provides parents with strategies they can use to encourage positive behaviour as well as manage challenging behaviour.  Aileen feels strongly about working with families and empowering parents to best understand their child’s development, so that they can feel confident about how to help their child at home.
